Since our preschooler got sick over the holiday break we ended up spending a little more quality time on the couch than expected, resting and recovering. This gave us a chance to sample some of Amazon’s new original series for kids and see how they stack up to kid’s programming on Sprout, PBS Kids, Disney, and Nickelodeon. Currently Amazon has three series available to stream via their Amazon Prime Instant Video apps (and two more coming later this year). Of the shows we sampled, the stop-motion animation show Tumble Leaf was the favorite. At the beginning of each episode a crab drags a treasure chest up from the ocean to discover an item that will serve as the focus for that episode. Fig the Fox and his friends then spend the next 12 minutes problem solving and discovering things that are perfect for inquisitive preschool minds. Such super-cute animation and engaging stories led to a family binge session the likes of which we haven’t seen since 24 came out on DVD while we were in college. The future of television is streaming!
